How To Clean Out Ssd

I use a 120gb SSD for my OS; Windows 7, and I have a 2tb HDD which I try to use for everything else. My PC is about 2 years old and slowly over time my SSD has become full, I was always able to just make a little space for it, but recently it has become jam packed. I tried doing the simple disk cleanup, but that only gets me under 100mb of excess space. I then looked into the program files section of my ssd and which is odd because I have 2 folders for it; a (Program Files) and a (Program Files x86). Opening them up it seems they are virtually identical.

I'm no expert on this, but what I've tried thus far is dragging the folder Program Files from my C: drive into my D: drive. I'm assuming this is a very improper way to do this, so I've never fully committed to doing it. The plan was to drag the folder into the d: drive, then delete the folder in the c: drive.

However I have tried deleting random folders in my program files of my c: drive and I keep getting an error that reads "The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program". This happens with virtually every file I try to delete in the program files. I know that the program files folder contains over 20gb of programs, even though I try to stop programs from installing onto my c: drive.

Whenever I install a program, it always tries to place the main folder in the c: drive and it doesn't give me an option to place it in the d: drive until after the installer program is already in a file on the c: drive.

I know this thread is all over the place, but I've described my situation to the best of my ability. It's gotten to the point where I can't even update my windows, or any other apps for that matter. Please help

1. Do NOT simply drag your Program Files off to a different drive. Tears will result.
If you have done so, copy it back.

2. Don't just delete random subfolders. Again, tears will result.

3. Most applications DO give you the opportunity to choose where they install. Don't just accept the default.

4. Applications do not actually take up much space. Movies, games, music take FAR more than just applications.

5. Install and run WinDirStat

Lastly...this is why a 120GB SSD is no longer really a viable option.

Start with the basics. Snapshots, swap file, hibernation file. Then disk cleanup with system files.

Thankfully some logic kicked in on my part and I've never deleted anything officially on my C: drive. I'll install that program and have a go.

Lesson learned on my next computer build. I will without a doubt be purchasing a much larger SSD
